William Blackledge Whitfield Letter and Diary, 1859-1860

William Blackledge Whitfield was a student at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, N.C., in the mid-19th century. The collection includes a letter and a photocopy of a diary. The letter, dated 23 June 1859, is from Whitfield in North Carolina to his teacher, E. S. Stickney, in Marion, Ala., asking for the certificate that Whitfield needs to enter the sophomore class at the University of North Carolina and thanking Stickney for his interest in him. The diary (101 pp.) was written by Whitfield, 24 March-10 June 1860, while a student at UNC. It consists of daily entries that focus largely on campus activities, faculty members, fellow students, and other details of Whitfield's life.
